THE SEA LANES CHALLENGE.

New for 2019 this “Iron” distance 3.8km swim, sponsored by Sea Lanes, is for competent sea swimmers only. A pool swim pace of 20min/km is a minimum standard. We won't be checking, but potential entrants should be realistic about their current ability. For safety reasons, anyone left too far behind the race will be picked up by a support boat.

Entries for the Sea Lanes Challenge are strictly limited to 50 swimmers. Swimmers taking on the Triple Crown will be included in the 50 entries.

MORE DETAILS

Sea temperatures

The water temperature in the sea at Brighton in July can range between 14-16°C, which will add to the challenge of this event. As for the air temperature for this time of year, you can expect 18-22°C.

WETSUITS

There will be both wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories for both males and females. However, should the sea temperature be deemed unsuitably cold, we will require all competitors to wear a wetsuit.

  • Open Women Nonwetsuit: Any woman over the age of 16 not wearing a wetsuit

  • Open Women Wetsuited: Any woman over the age of 16 wearing a wetsuit

  • Open Men Nonwetsuited: Any man over the age of 16 not wearing a wetsuit

  • Open Men Wetsuited: Any man over the age of 16 wearing a wetsuit

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

There will be a bag drop at Registration in Paddle Village. Bags will be transported from here to the finish at Sea Lanes on Madeira Drive.

We recommend a pair of flip-flops to wear onto the beach. These will be bundled up and returned to the swim finish at Sea lanes for you to pick up at the end of your swim.  Any items not reclaimed by the end of the swim will be taken to the Information Desk in Paddle Village.

All valuables are left at your own risk. Brighton Tri Club cannot accept any liability for lost or damaged items.

SWIM FOR CHARITY

Whilst £12.50 from every entry already goes to support the Paddle round the pier charity, why not consider sponsorship for your swim and raise some extra money. Every little bit helps, and each £5 raised and handed in at the main Paddle Registration will be rewarded with a raffle ticket; there are loads of cool prizes to be won.

SAFETY

There will be a cut-off time for the completion of the swim. This is dependent on weather and tide conditions on the day and will be informed during the briefing. If you are unable to reach the finish line in this time, you will be picked up by a support boat.

All safety decisions made on the water by the safety crew must be respected by all swimmers without question. If you disagree with any decision, please save the discussion until everyone is on dry land.

Refunds

Paddle Round the Pier, Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, and Brighton Tri Club reserve the right to change/substitute/shorten the course in the event of bad weather. This is to ensure the event runs safely. If the Saturday event is cancelled, there is a backup event scheduled for the Sunday. If both events are cancelled, Brighton Tri Club will provide an automatic 50% refund of entry fees. Refunds are not possible in other circumstances. Significant costs are incurred prior to the event, and it's the nature of an event taking place in the sea that a complete cancellation is possible. As the swim is a non commercial event staffed entirely by volunteers, underwriting a 100% refund would make it impossible to put the event on. We hope swimmers understand, and we hope never to need a cancellation policy.

Substitution

Substitutions and switches between swims can be made via the entry system up to 9pm on Friday 28th June. There is an additional £10 processing fee for each substitution.  Substitutions on the day are prohibited for safety reasons. Swimmers who wish to switch to a longer distance will also have to pay the difference in cost between the distances.

Terms & Conditions

By entering this event you explicitly agree that you understand that while the event will provide safety cover and support, Brighton Tri Club and Paddle Round the Pier do not take responsibility for your safety and well-being in the water; you hold that responsibility at all times. Please do not swim if you are feeling unwell or under-par on the day of the event.
